Insecticides are chemicals used to kill or control insects. They are used in agriculture to protect crops from pests, and to eliminate insects that spread disease. 
How insecticides work
Systemic insecticides: These insecticides are absorbed by plants and spread throughout their tissues. Insects that eat the treated plant will ingest the insecticide and die. 
Contact insecticides: These insecticides penetrate insects and are toxic to them. 
Types of insecticides
Organophosphates: These insecticides are derived from phosphorus acids and are highly toxic to vertebrates. They are similar in structure to nerve gases and have a similar mode of action. 
Carbamates: These insecticides inhibit the enzyme cholinesterase, which is essential for the nervous system. They are highly effective but can be toxic to non-target species, including humans. 
Chlorinated hydrocarbons: These insecticides include DDT, BHC,  , and others.
